The new Practical Buddhist Meditations

The new Practical Buddhist Meditations

Wednesdays- Starts on 16th January 2008 - 19.00 - 20.30

This is an introductory course on basic Buddhist meditation techniques and follows on from the Monday night sessions ‘Meditation for Beginners’. It is a down to earth, no nonsense guide to Buddhist meditation. It does not assume that you know anything at all about meditation or about Buddhism. It does not even assume that you are even interested in learning more about Buddhism. This course assumes simply that those who come are interested in learning something about meditation and Buddhist meditation in particular.

Course Topics

Overall, the following topics will be covered during this 6 week course:

· meditation posture and arranging the body

· purposes and benefits of meditation

· different skills used in meditation and useful in daily life

· the difference between meditation and simple relaxation

· obstacles to meditation and their antidotes

· advice for establishing a long-term meditation practice

· using the benefits of meditation in everyday living

· breathing meditations, mindfulness meditations,     visualizations

· analytical meditations: meditation on equanimity, transforming

· negative experiences into positive

16th Jan to 20th Feb and 19th Mar to 23rd April

New Discovering Buddhism Programme

Don’t miss this opportunity!
The new Discovering Buddhism programme starts on 5 September

This term you have the chance to start the Discovering Buddhism programme which is suitable for beginners and for those who want to deepen their practice. Discovering Buddhism is the FPMT introductory programme designed to give an experiential taste of the Buddha’s teachings, consisting of fourteen half-term modules which take us two years to complete. It is taught on Wednesday evenings, with a weekend retreat to finish some modules.

This is the third time that JBCL has run this modular programme and students have found it very helpful. Each module can be done in two ways: 1) as a “certificate” student, you need to attend most of the module, do the required reading and do the two-day retreat, or 2) as a normal drop-in class. Sessions are taught by Venerable Mary or David Midgley

End of Summer Term

This weekend saw the final teachings by Geshe Tashi before he leaves for 6 months retreat in India. This was marked by the sharing of three cakes signifying the three volumes of the Lam Rim and gifts of money by Jamyang on behalf of all the students at Jamyang and pleas for him to come back to Leeds soon. It also signified the end of a 3-year marathon teaching on all three volumes of the Lam Rim Chenmo and the occasion was marked by a traditional reading of the first page of volume one in Tibetan followed by the presentation of katas to students.

Some students were fortunate to be able to accompany Geshe Tashi to Harewood House to see the sand mandala and stupa located in the grounds. The evening sun shone, allbeit briefly, while Geshe Tashi lit incense and chanted Tibetan prayers followed by circumnambulations of the stupa itself.

On Sunday Jamyang ran a 'gompa in a garden shed' at the I Love West Leeds festival in Pudsey Park. The gompa created a lot of interest and visitors were encouraged to write out their wishes and pin them to the ribbons hanging from an adjacent tree. After a couple of hours there appeared to be hundreds of wishes fluttering in the breeze and the atmosphere this created was amazing - well done to all the Jamyangers who organised and manned the shed, especially those who were there at 7.00 in the morning to decorate our shed!

Photos from the weekend should be available on the web site shortly.

So that was this weekend - now for this coming week!

Monday - Mediation for Beginners with Jay Simpson and assisted by Bernie Lewis - 7.00-8.00pm

Wednesday - Purification Practices with David Midgeley - 7.00-9.00pm

Thursday - Puja & Community Meeting with Bob Charlton (including a dedication of all the wishes from Sunday at Pudsey Park) - 7.00-9.00pm

Friday & Saturday - 'How to Develop Mindfulness' with Andy Wistreich - Fri 7.00-9.00pm and Sat 10.00am-4.00pm. This will be Andy's final teaching at Jamyang Leeds before he goes on long retreat - we wish him many realisations!

This brings to an end this term's activities - apart from the Meditation for Beginners which continues throughout the summer. Many thanks to all our students, teachers, volunteers, trustees and our Director for all their hard work and supreme efforts. Now we get ready for next term with many more exciting visiting teachers coming to Jamyang Leeds in the autumn - so watch this space!

Have a peaceful summer!

Medicine Buddha - Healing Day

The Healing day was a great success ! With the help of all the volunteers and Ven. Mary.

We had lots of treatments to offer and lots of goodies too.

Shiatsu, Reiki, Reflexology, Hot Wax Treatment, Meditation and of course food and drink.

The atmosphere was wonderful. Everyone was relaxed, calm and nourished.

You could either have a 1/2 hour treatment by the professionals or simply relax in the coffee shop with a slice of cake.

There was our usual shop with treats to buy and also a student, of our visiting teacher Geshe Tashi, donated a peace of artwork that was auctioned off, all proceeds to Jamyang !

The day was so successful that another will be held soon !

Jamyang wishes a heart felt thanks to all the therapists who donated there time and effort to help our Centre.

Jamyang would also like to thank everyone who helped to set up the day and who helped out.

May they quickly attain true happiness and enlightenment.
