| The Sanghata Sutra Dharma-Paryaya
website is at http://www.sanghatasutra.net/ where you can download a copy. The site also contains a useful Guide to Reciting and an audio file so you can hear from an expert how to pronounce all the tongue-twisting Sanskrit names.
The Sutra of Golden Light
The most recent translation can be downloaded from http://www.fpmt.org/golden_light_sutra/ where there is more information, including advice from Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Lama Zopa Rinpoche regularly suggests reciting the Sanghata Sutra Dharma-Paryaya and to dedicate recitations to the removal of obstacles to various projects - including the FPMT Maitreya Project. Several of us at Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds - and beyond - have found this to be beneficial so in 2005 we formed the Sutra Recitation Circle. We usually recite individually at home since we live miles away from each other! In 2008 the Circle added the Sutra of Golden Light to its “repertoire”.
To join in, read the advice from Lama Zopa Rinpoche and download the sutra you wish to recite. It is good to try to recite on a regular basis - even as little as four lines every day. To enhance the merit of recitation Lama Zopa Rinpoche also suggests reciting on full- and new-moon days and Buddha days. These can be found on the Tibetan calendar at http://www.fpmt.org/resources/dates.asp
How to recite
1. Get your motivation really clear in your mind before you begin.
2. Recite out loud as quickly as possible. One recitation of the Sanghata Sutra takes about 3 hours. Do not be put off! Reciting or writing just one four-line verse is said to bring enormous benefits.
3. Dedicate at the end.
The above websites have places to register recitations. To keep it simple, each person in our circle is registering their own recitations, if they wish to do so.
Each sutra is displayed on either side of the altar at Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds so there can be on-going recitations in the Centre itself. Anyone with a few minutes to spare is invited to recite a page or so and then turn the page ready for the next person.
The JBCL Sutra Recitation Circle keeps in touch by e-mail or phone. To be included send your contact details to smile@jamyangleeds.co.uk and state Sutra Recitation Circle in the subject line.
Everyone welcome. Information about special events, such as world-wide recitations, is included in the JBCL e-newsletter. To receive this please enter your email address and click the subscribe button on the right of this page.
